2009 Audi A4

2009 Audi A4

Ask most folks on the street what Audi is all about, and you probably won't get the same answer twice. Arch rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz enjoy clearly defined identities, while Audi suffers from a distinct lack thereof. Too bad, since behind the four interlocked rings stands a 100-year-old company with an illustrious racing program and a pool of extraordinarily talented engineers and designers.

Audi has plans—big plans—boldly proclaiming it will outsell Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz by 2015. But Audi's visions of world domination will be clouds in its coffee unless it nails the launch of the all-new version of the sedan that has been the cornerstone of its product line since 1997: the compact A4. Overstating the A4's role in the establishment of Audi's hegemony throughout the world would be impossible.

Subtle yet Effective Restyle

Imagery doesn't do justice to the new A4. At first blush it appears to have been shorted by the design team, which certainly outdid itself on the A4's luscious platform-mate, the A5/S5 coupe, but bestowed much less of that car's swoopy curvaceousness on the four-door version. On the road, however, the A4 has infinitely more presence, and not just because it's 4.6 inches longer and two inches wider than before. To help optimize weight distribution and thereby neutralize the A4's notoriously pushy handling, the engine-and-transmission layout has been smartly reengineered, allowing the front axle to be moved forward 6.1 inches. This in turn created a shorter front overhang; a longer, sexier hood; and a more aggressive road stance.

Also appreciable in the flesh are several subtle details such as an upswept lower-body contour, tastefully swollen fenders, and ribs running from the headlamps to the mirrors. And although various iterations of the A4's grille, arching window line, and sculpted lighting elements front and rear are found throughout the Audi range, the LED eyeliner should still be a novelty by the time the A4 arrives in the U.S. next August as an '09 model.

2008 Aston Martin Vantage

2008 Aston Martin Vantage
Cool New Car Models
It’s been twenty years since Aston Martin, deeply in debt and little more than an automotive anachronism, was swallowed up by Ford empire. Say what you will about Ford’s other British luxury marques, the past two decades have been good ones for Aston.

When Ford acquired the brand, in 1987, Aston sales plunged to as little as 42 cars a year and at one point, keeping the assembly line rolling depended on the sale of a single car to a wealthy – and quite drunk – British aristocrat. These days, Aston’s aspirations are positively mass-market, with an array of new products promising to push volume up near 10,000 cars a year, and the company well in the black for the first time in its 93-year history.

That’ll be good news for the new owners, David Richards, CEO of racing's Prodrive and Chairman of Aston Martin Racing, and two Kuwaiti banks. They’re investing $925 million to take control of the company, though Ford will maintain ties to its former subsidiary by holding onto a 15-percent, non-controlling stake.

Provencal posing

To understand Aston’s transformation, we caught a flight over to Provence , the painfully pretty French countryside where the British marque provided us an opportunity to test drive the all-new V8 Vantage Roadster.

The Vantage coupe made its appearance barely 18 months ago and served as the primary catalyst for the brand’s revival. Like Bentley’s Continental GT, the Vantage provided a new and more affordable entry point for Aston aspirants, roughly doubling sales in the process. The new roadster is likely to conjure up similar magic, based on several days of driving through the narrow, winding lines of the French countryside.

Low and sleek, few cars have the visual stopping power of the Vantage, roadster or coupe. The nose tapers gracefully into the distinctive Aston grille, a small brand badge wedded to the hood above. The overall look is balances between elegance and machismo, with slightly flared wheel wells hinting at the raw power under the skin. A chromed accent line darts across the side gills, flowing into doors that swing slightly upward, almost scissor-like, when opened. The hips rise gently into the tail, a subtle spoiler capping the deck lid.

With the roadster, the steeply raked windshield wraps into a multi-layer ragtop that stows neatly into the trunk. Aston designers have done a marvelous job of maintaining the dramatic roofline of the coupe. The company’s engineers have, in turn, crafted a convertible tap that is quick – by our count requiring just 20 seconds to operate – and surprisingly effective at sealing off wind and road noise when raised. MORE--

Gorges and graceful

We picked up our roadster in the town of Gorges , an ancient city straddling steep limestone hills overlooking orchards that have been operating since the days of the Romans. The roads leading up the cliffs haven’t been widened much in the millennia since, those they’ve been mercifully well-paved.

Slipping the key into the ignition, we reached over to tap the Start button crowning the Vantage’s center console. The big V-8 fired up with a delightful roar that echoed off Gordes’ limestone buildings. Slipping into gear, we steered our way out onto the main roadway leading into the local wine country.

The word, graceful, immediately came to mind. Though we were well aware of the power under the hood, the throttle was easy to manage, with none of the bucking that you often experience at low speeds with other high-performance sports cars.

As we came to the end of Gordes, and the tarmac widened up, we gave the hungry V-8 some gas and listened in awe as the engine revs topped 4000, a delineation marked with a resonant “brap” that likely could be heard halfway to Paris.

That marks the transition in the 4.3-liter V-8’s variable inlet camshaft timing, which is designed to enhance breathing at both lower and higher revs. It’s as smooth an engine as you could imagine considering the power it’s capable of, a solid 380 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque.

The all-alloy engine is mated to a smooth and extremely quick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox that’s rear-mounted, Vantage project manager David King explains, “to ensure a perfect, 50-50 weight balance.” We’d be hard-pressed to find fault with the stick, though in the real world, Aston expects the overwhelming majority of owners to opt, instead, for the electronically-shifted version of this gearbox, dubbed Sportshift.

Don’t confuse this with a paddle-shifted automatic. But don’t write it off because of the drum of complaints you might have heard about BMW’s SMG or Maserati’s DuoSelect. Aston’s auto/manual is quick – though not as fast as Ferrari’s – and quite a bit of fun to drive. Our biggest complaint is the curious pause after you press the “R” button to go into reverse. Senior Aston officials promise to get that little inconvenience addressed with new software.

With 0-60 times claimed at 4.9 seconds and a rated top speed of 175 mph, the Vantage roadster isn’t the fastest car you can buy for your money, but it’s comfortingly close. What it doesn’t deliver immediately off the line it makes up for at cruising speed. Slower cars were passed in a blur as we nudged the speedometer needle higher and higher. MORE—

Pushing the limits

The roadster is a confidence-builder. The longer you drive it, the more you want to push its limits. Provencal country roads can be treacherous, turns coming out of nowhere, followed by steep hills and dales. The roadster only embraced the opportunity, like a thoroughbred led out to the track, smoothly carving its way around the tightest turns with only the most minimal body roll.

The Vantage rides on an independent double-aluminum wishbone up front and the same arrangement in back. There are monotube shocks and anti-roll bars and anti-dive technology keeps the car remarkably level during both full-out acceleration and panic braking. Interestingly, Aston opted for 15-percent stiffer springs than are used in the Vantage Coupe, which enhances that straight-and-level ride.

The car, as a whole is surprisingly forgiven of missteps, regaining its composure with nary a complaint. The brakes deserve particular kudos. As with the throttle, their operation is surprisingly smooth, linear and progressive, with plenty of stopping power but no grab.

If all this sounds a bit too much like a love note, it probably does come close, but we do have some modest complaints, most of them involving the interior. The cabin is, overall, quite tastefully outfitted, with plenty of leather and suede-like alcantara. So why does the center stack not quite live up to the overall look-and-feel? For one thing, it took quite some time to find the buttons controlling the navigation system, which relies on a screen that pops out from the top of the instrument panel. The driver’s gauges are, however, far more satisfying, both lavish and functional in design.

But why, on a car carrying a price tag of $126,400 ( U.S. ) does Aston not offer a power tilt-and-telescope steering wheel? And why do we not get “express” windows, which operate with one touch, up or down, as we do in a mid-range Hyundai? And since we’re niggling here, can we also have a one-touch start, like Bentley, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz offer, so we don’t have to hold the button until the engine catches?

The Vantage Roadster’s seating effectively balances comfort and support. Even as a long day of driving, we felt refreshed and ready to keep going. But due to the tight squeeze between instrument panel and cargo wall, there is a trade-off between recline angle and legroom.

Those complaints aside, there isn’t much to fault with the Roadster and we can see why Aston expects a sharp boost in sales, with the ragtop version likely outselling its hardtop sibling.

Just how much is up for Aston remains to be seen. With the sale of the company now official, the British maker’s frighteningly lean management team can get back to what matters, including the development of still more product. That includes the Rapide, Aston’s first-ever four-door.

Intriguingly, the Rapide will roll out about the same time as Porsche’s own sedan/sports car hybrid, the Panamera, is due to reach showrooms. For better or for worse, there are likely to be a lot of comparisons made between the two brands in the coming years, especially as Aston establishes itself as a serious contender, rather than an eccentric alternative.

Uli Bez, the chief executive who steered Aston’s product and business renaissance, insists his company has no direct competitor. Perhaps, but while we understand his argument, there’s likely to still be some cross-shopping. More than a few potential customers are certain to make comparisons between the Vantage Roadster and, for example, the blisteringly fast Porsche Turbo.

Measured by raw performance, Porsche would likely have the upper hand. But the appeal of the Vantage, roadster or coupe, is something else entirely. It’s as much about exclusivity, distinctiveness, and style. The Porsche will turn your head, but the Aston’s likely to make your eyes pop.

Despite the recent success of Aston Martin, it remains a surprisingly unknown brand in the U.S. market, which accounts for a relatively small, 28 percent of worldwide sales. Increasing American awareness is one of the big projects for Aston’s new owners, but a car like the new V8 Vantage Roadster should help. In an increasingly crowded field, it’s real standout.

2008 Aston Martin DBS

2008 Aston Martin DBS
Cool New Car Models
The DBS will launch the new Aston Martin era with one hell of a bang. Set to go into production in October, it'll be quicker than any Aston road car before it, thanks to its massaged V-12. It'll weigh about 220 pounds less than a regular DB9. It'll wear a body kit designed to help it slice through the air more cleanly. And it'll introduce high-tech materials and a new upgraded cockpit for the entire DB line.

The ultimate embodiment of the DB9 coupe, the DBS will replace the muscular Vanquish as the flagship Aston Martin, although senior execs struggle to admit it.

"It'll be our halo car and will have superior performance to the now-aged Vanquish," said Aston's Ulrich Bez earlier this year, before quickly countering: "It's not the Vanquish successor, but another car to raise awareness of the brand." Adds design director Marek Reichman, "The DBS isn't replacing the Vanquish; it's a standalone product based on the DB9."

The $260,000 Vanquish goes out of production shortly. The price of the DBS? About the same. And with just 300 cars to be produced each year, the DBS will be as exclusive as, er...the Vanquish. Still, reading between the lines, Bez and Reichman are clearly leaving room for a new Aston supercar to slide in above the DBS at some point in the future.

At least they can stop acting like caring parents protecting their eldest child from a younger, more talented sibling. When the 450-horse DB9 was launched in 2004, it immediately matched the heavier, pricier Vanquish, which needed some nurturing-well a 51-horse boost-to stay on top. But without the need to protect the Vanquish, the DBS is edgier: lighter, louder, and faster.

Is it a track-day car? "Absolutely," says Reichman. But it won't be a stripped-out street racer like Ferrari's 360 Challenge Stradale. "We want an element of luxury, too. It'll still be swathed in carpet, but a carpet made of lighter materials. There'll still be leather and Alcantara." Bez puts it this way: "The DBS is brutal, but dressed in black tie."

A bit like Daniel Craig's edgier, darker, more intense James Bond, then, though Reichman, who started work on the DBS in October 2005, insists the car's crash-and-burn cameo in "Casino Royale" was never on the original agenda. "Part of my brief was to make the DB9 look more edgy, like a tough guy in a dinner suit," he says. " I wanted to convey strength, power, and agility." One month into the design phase, however, the producers of the James Bond films walked into Reichman's studio, and the seeds were sown for Aston's return to the big screen.

"We didn't design the car for Bond; we wanted a flagship DB9," insists Reichman. "That's what the project is about." Bond, did, however, influence the new Aston's name: Australian George Lazenby drove a DBS in his sole performance as 007 in 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." (Lazenby trivia: He served in Australia's SAS [special forces] before becoming one of the world's highest-paid male models and Europe's Marlboro Man.) Reichman says the "S" is appropriate for the car's sporting intent.

Whether the DBS is officially Aston's halo model, insiders admit it is the company's technology flagship. Naturally, the car is built on the DB9's aluminum VH chassis, and the exotic materials don't end there. The new body kit is carbon fiber and all business. "Everything is present for an engineering reason, nothing is extraneous," notes Reichman. The new lower bumper section feeds more air to the enlarged radiator and oil cooler and also helps cool the standard carbon ceramic brake rotors.

2008 Aston Martin DB9

2008 Aston Martin DB9
Cool New Car Models
The Aston Martin DB9 offers some redesigned interior elements and an upgraded infotainment system for 2008. The DB9 is powered by a 6.0-liter V-12 engine that generates 450 horsepower. Competitors include the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Either a conventional six-speed manual gearbox or a button-controlled six-speed automatic, called Touchtronic II, can be installed. Aston Martin says the manual-shift DB9 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. That's quick, but not blindingly fast like the Gallardo and F430. According to Car and Driver and Motor Trend, the Gallardo sprints to 60 mph in around 4 seconds, while the F430 does it in 3.5.

The DB9 was the first car to be hand-built at a new state-of-the-art facility in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England. In addition to the coupe, a Volante convertible is also offered.

Recent revisions added more cabin stowage, coat hooks, rear parking sensors, cruise control, heated front seats, power-folding side mirrors, an umbrella, a navigation system and, for 2008, Bluetooth connectivity.

Exterior
A long aluminum hood sits above a familiar Aston Martin grille, and side strakes are located on the front quarter panels. The body panels are aluminum or lightweight composites, while magnesium is used for the steering column and inner doorframes. Locating the gearbox at the rear helps achieve 50/50 weight distribution, and a full undertray reduces lift and drag. The DB9's rear haunches are wide and curvaceous, and its profile features a prominent trunk. "Swan wing" doors rise at a 12-degree angle for easier access. Front parking sensors and LEDs in the door handles are optional.

An optional Sports Pack on the coupe includes new five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, a revised undertray and a lower ride height. This works with revised dampers and springs and a reworked front anti-roll bar to provide better handling.

The Volante's fabric top folds underneath a hard tonneau cover that sits flush with the bodywork. Sensors can detect a potential rollover and deploy twin roll-hoops. Aston Martin says the windshield pillars can withstand twice the car's body weight.

Interior
The DB9 offers 2+2 seating that features Bridge of Weir leather. Walnut, mahogany or bamboo wood trim is available. A host of information and entertainment upgrades for 2008 include new steering-wheel audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity and an auxiliary jack for MP3 players. Satellite radio is optional. The standard audio system has been cranked up to 700 watts, and the multilingual information center adds Russian, Greek and Chinese to its repertoire.

Other changes include a redesigned center armrest and new sun visors.

To start the engine, the driver must press a clear glass button. The tachometer dial runs counterclockwise and has no redline. Instead, a red warning symbol appears at various engine speeds, depending on ambient temperature and engine mileage.

Under the Hood
The DB9's 6.0-liter V-12 produces 450 hp and 420 pounds-feet of torque. The ZF six-speed automatic transmission uses buttons to select Drive, Park, Neutral and Reverse. A Touchtronic manual mode permits gear changes using paddles behind the steering wheel. A conventional Graziano six-speed manual gearbox is also available.

Aston Martin says the Volante's maximum speed is 186 mph, the same as the coupe.

Safety
All-disc antilock brakes incorporate electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Seat-mounted side-impact airbags and an electronic stability system are standard. For 2007, new seats feature standard occupant-detection sensors, plus head and thorax side airbags.

Driving Impressions
Handling is where the DB9 truly excels, hanging on with passion through swift curves and delivering a civilized experience. Confidence levels reach well beyond the sports-car norm. The suspension follows road contours closely, yet ride comfort is satisfying.

The dashboard is packed with controls. Most markings are clear, but the gauges aren't easy to read.

The V-12 generates a rich exhaust sound. Gear changes are quite easy using the dashboard selector buttons and steering-wheel paddles, and automatic mode does a fine job. After a momentary hesitation to downshift, the DB9 lunges ahead with unbridled force. The Sport Pack option has not been tested.

Rear headroom is scant and legroom is virtually nonexistent, but the front compartment is roomy enough in a snug.

1999 AM General Hummer

1999 AM General Hummer
Cool New Car Models
The Hummer has been available for public consumption for nearly eight years. So one may expect the drool and gawk factor among civilians to be relatively nonexistent--especially in Los Angeles. Not so. We're amazed every time we test one of these burly beasts how many people still stare, point, and pull their younguns away from the curb in fear.

AM General sells less than 1,000 vehicles per year to the public, and with an as-tested price tag of $83,149 for our loaded four-door open top, Hummers have the status of certain Ferraris, Porches, and Bentleys. They have the ability to endow the average man with instant celebrity. But we've always been more impressed with the Hummer's four-wheeling capability than its restaurant valet cachet. And increasing the Hummer's four-wheeling capability is exactly where AM General concentrated its improvements for 1999.

Although the rugged and unique drivetrain remains for 1999, AM General has developed a new ABS/four-wheel traction-control system that endows the Hummer with the four-wheeling ability of locking differentials without the on-road drawbacks. Hummers have always had the torque-sensing Zexel-Torsen limited-slip differentials in both front and rear axles, but while their operation is smooth, limitations are apparent when Hummers encounter extreme low-traction conditions. AM General's new Torq Trac 4 (TT4) traction-control system combines with the Torsen limited-slip differentials to provide torque to the wheel(s) that has traction. The system is very similar to the one used on the new Land Rover Discovery Series II. Basically, ABS wheel sensors detect wheel speeds and generate signals transmitted to an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that decides which wheel requires braking forces and sends it via a hydraulic pump. The TT4 system limits wheelspin during acceleration and automatically transfers torque when any wheel loses traction. If the TT4 system is active for more than 60 seconds, it will deactivate and allow the brakes to cool for an additional 60 seconds.

It's complex, but our experience is that the TT4 system performs reliably and always seems to enable forward progress, even when just one tire has traction.

The only engine offered for 1999 is the 6.5L Detroit Diesel turbo-diesel V-8 that now generates 195 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Power is channeled through a GM 4L80E four-speed automatic to an NVG 242 transfer case that splits power to hypoid-type differentials housing 2.56:1 gears. The 1.92-geared hubs increase the Hummer's crawlability to a ratio of 33:1. While the diesel doesn't provide brisk acceleration, it does gather speed better than previous motors and works well with the gearing during highway passing maneuvers. The four-wheel independent suspension combined with our optional mild-tread Goodyear Wrangler GSA 37-inch radials offered a decent highway ride, especially considering the beast's 2-ton load-carrying capacity.

Overall, we were impressed with the traction improvements to the '99 Hummer. While we didn't run the Rubicon or Sledgehammer with our test unit (hey, it's a borrowed $83,000 4x4), the big beast was able to traverse some fairly extreme off-camber notches that would have stopped non-TT4-equipped units. For those who can afford it, the Hummer gives an empowering driving experience that can be matched by few vehicles. And with the new traction- control system, that experience is only intensified.

2000 AM General Hummer

2000 AM General Hummer
Cool New Car Models

AM General started selling the civilian version of the U.S. Army's newest run-about vehicle in 1992. Since then it has remained a vehicle purchased by two groups of people: those looking for ultimate off-road ability and the ultra-rich seeking the ultimate status symbol. While we classify the Hummer as a full-size sport-utility vehicle, it is actually a Class 3 truck. This means that it has a gross vehicle rating of over 10,000 pounds and does not have to meet all of the safety guidelines mandated for smaller vehicles (it has no airbags). The only other vehicles sold in new-car dealerships to achieve this rating are some heavy-duty versions of the full-size pickup trucks.

Hummer comes in five bodystyles: two- and four-door hardtops, 4-door convertibles with a pickup-type bed, 4-door wagons that has an enclosed rear cargo area like a conventional sport-utility vehicle, and a new 4-door wagon with a sloping rear roof called the slantback. All 4-door models seat a minimum of four people in two front bucket seats and two rear bucket seats, while 2-door models have room for two adults. Only one trim level is offered, and it includes permanent 4-wheel drive, front and rear air conditioning, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, and a third row bench seat in wagon models. Dual airbags are not available.

There is only one powertrain combination: a 6.5-liter turbodiesel V8 and a 4-speed automatic transmission. Both are built by General Motors. Antilock brakes are standard as is a full-time 4WD system called TorqTrac4. TT4 for short, this system uses the antilock brakes sensors to apply the brakes when wheels start to slip in limited-traction situations. Madonna

Madonna

Madonna has generated academic interest. Interdisciplinary research and publications address her relationship to and place within commodity culture, the mass-media spectacles she creates, and the iconography of minority groups such as gay and lesbian people, which she uses in videos such as those for "Vogue", "Like a Prayer", "La Isla Bonita" and "Borderline". These publications were so extensive that in the 1990s, academics would refer to "Madonna Studies" as a sub-field of media studies.

In 2006 a new water bear species (Latin: Tardigrada), Echiniscus madonnae, was named after Madonna. The paper with the description of E. madonnae was published in the international journal of animal taxonomy Zootaxa in March 2006 (Vol. 1154, pages: 1–36). The authors' justification for the name of the new species was: "We take great pleasure in dedicating this species to one of the most significant artists of our times, Madonna Louise Veronica Ritchie." The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) number of the species is 711164.

For those of us on this side of the Atlantic, the argument has always been the same: Is North America more competitive than Japan? Europe has never really been a consideration for one reason or another, and it should not be, right? Well, don't be so sure.

When the Japanese decided to launch their offensive on export markets in the late '70s, it was North America that was hit first, and companies such as Toyota, Nissan and Honda won buyers with outstanding, high-quality products. As Bob Lutz said last year, the best thing that ever happened to Chrysler was Toyota. To expand on that, the best thing that ever happened to the Big 3 was Toyota, Nissan and Honda.. Their presence awoke the U.S. industry and has fostered huge improvement in cost, quality and productivity.

A later challenge

Japanese competition came much later in Europe. Unlike the United States, Europe is split among six major manufacturers: General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen, Fiat, Renault and PSA. Although competition was tough, a challenge like the one from the Japanese had never hit their shores. And many of the European Economic Union nations had stiff import limitations, again unlike the United States. What ultimately happened was a gradual realization of their competitive standing from benchmarking new Japanese competitors and, in the case of Ford Europe and General Motors Europe, some shared learnings from North America.

For most of the European manufacturers in the 1980s and for still some today, cost and productivity were poor, and although outgoing quality was good, the internal cost to acheive it was enormous. One might think it's not as critical if costs are higher since the European market commands from 20 to 40 percent higher pricing for a comparable vehicle in the United States. But are costs really higher? Remember, a 17 percent value-added tax is tagged on every vehicle as it leaves the factory door. Shipping and distribution costs are also higher. Labor costs are higher only because each person is limited to approximately 35 hours per week week in which he or she can work. In the United States, we consider that part-time; in Europe, it's a means of achieving full employment according to more socialistic beliefs.

Speedy improvements

In the last three or four years in Europe, armed with the knowledge of where the rest of the world was going and where Europe had to change, the industry is moving at breakneck speed. GM plants in Eisenach, Aspern and Antwerp have areas of their facilities that rival the Japanese. Chrysler/Steyr operations in Austria are small-volume benchmarks for cost, quality and productivity. Some Ford operations are among their best in the world. With the help of former Toyota masters, Porsche has done a complete turnaround of its Stuttgart factory.

Whereas it was always assumed that Europe was as far behind the Americas as the Americas were behind Japan, Europe has probably moved faster than either. The European manufacturers can be stubborn and very inward-looking about their own operations and systems. But given awareness and knowledge and, ultimately, new direction, they can move at blinding speed. Their education system provides some of the highest-quality, broadest-base knowledge in the world. Skilled tradesmen are very highly trained, and engineers are plentiful.

What has happened is some of the quickest and most comprehensive improvement in the auto industry. And Europe needs it. The market has been in the doldrums for years, and competition is fierce. With the knowledge of what manufacturing improvement can do for a company, plants are making huge strides.

Just when North American makers were thinking they could stay in the ring with Japan, look who's now jumped in the ropes. We think onlookers will be surprised.
